2012 Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 Review

The best way to describe the 2012 version of the Dorsoduro 1200 is to call it a lighter, more powerful version of the previous model with upgraded rider aids. Meaning, Aprilia has basically improved the Dorsoduro’s handling and added more sophistication to the traction control. New graphics distinguishes it from the original 2010-2011 model.

It’s fitting Aprilia chose to launch the new Dorsoduro in Sicily, as the tight and twisty roads suit the new bike’s personality well. It also just so happens that my arrival coincided with a Mount Etna eruption, covering the mountain in smoke and morning mist.

The new 2012 Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 may look almost the same as last year’s, but it’s received some significant changes.

At the start of our ride in Sicily, considerable amounts of ash covered the road. If you haven’t ridden in ash before, let me tell you straight away that this stuff is very slippery. So ABS and traction control were welcome features.

Aprilia’s 1197cc (106x67.8mm) V-Twin engine makes similar horsepower as V-Twin superbikes from 10 years ago but isn’t nearly as high strung. Aprilia claims 130 hp at 8700 rpm and 85 ft.-lb. at 7200 rpm. The sound of the engine when accelerating with full throttle out of corners is overpowering and it goes from a nice Twin tootle to full-on superbike sound in a second. The acceleration is quite violent, and if you’re coming straight off an inline-Four 600cc sportbike you should practice caution.

With an abundance of power on tap, it’s hard not to wheelie everywhere.

In addition to traction control, the usual Aprilia riding modes are employed to help the rider tame all this V-Twin power. Sport riding mode is fierce and gives instant access to all the bike’s power and beastly throttle response. If you ask me, this mode should really be called pure unadulterated difficult fun mode.

Then you have Touring mode, which in reality is where Sport mode should be. You get smooth and predictable throttle response with or without traction control. Power is subdued at low rpm and is fully released at higher rpm so that the rear wheel doesn’t spin out too fast or too early.

Rain mode is for severe weather and the max output is reduced to 100 hp. I still find myself getting really irritated each time I want to change riding modes as it’s practically impossible to do it whilst riding as throttle must be off and it takes an eternity for the system to obey my input on the starter button.

The Dorso’s riding position is very dirtbike-esque, although its saddle is a smidge more comfortable than a normal dirtbike.

Traction control is also adjustable in three levels (four if you include off), but in Touring mode, my preferred mode, I found level one or off to be most useful. Unlike the riding modes, traction control settings can be changed with ease but only when the Dorsoduro is at standstill. This is still better than the riding mode selection and change procedure.

I rode a vast part of the test with all rider aids turned off apart from the Touring engine map. This is how I like the Dorsoduro 1200 best, and despite going from great lean into early and hard acceleration, the rear wheel hardly spun enough for me to have any wish for traction control. If riding modes had been easier to change on the go or we had more breaks to split up the riding, I would have explored Sport mode with traction control set to level one a lot more.

While our European correspondent Tor Sagen enjoys sticking his leg out, he reports the Dorso can just as well be ridden as a sportbike.

The seat is spartan but slightly more comfortable than a full-on supermotard. My bum did hurt at the end of the test and my knees were a bit raw from leather suit movement after moving the heavy off-road boots up and down using the supermoto riding style.

New wheels contribute to the majority of the Dorso’s weight-loss plan. Stopping power is strong as ever with the Brembo calipers. Note the ABS ring within the rotor.

It’s easy to slide further forward than on a conventional motorcycle and also easy to slide backwards for some high-speed wind protection, adopting a clam-like seating position. The handlebar is wide with hand guards and gives very good control when riding through hairpin corners.

A Sachs 43mm inverted fork takes care of the front suspension, and a horizontally mounted shock sits at the back. Both are fully adjustable. You get 6.3 inches of travel on the front and 6.1 inches in back which is enough for a maxi road motard.

The brake set up is a double four-pot radial Brembo with 320mm discs front and 240mm single disc at the rear with separate ABS channels. ABS can be turned off and it’s much more fun to ride the Dorso this way, but it’s good ABS is available should you need it.

The new Aprilia wheels are said to be responsible for 5.9 lbs of the bike’s 6.6-lb. weight reduction. This reduces inertia by 15.4% at the front and 22.2 % at the back compared to the previous model. This allows for a more responsive and easier handling package through tight corners where change in direction needs to be quick when going fast. All in all, the new Dorsoduro 1200 should weigh in at just around the 441-lb. mark, which is still heavy, but at least Aprilia has reduced the weight in the places where it matters most.

The remaining weight reduction comes from a redesigned front mudguard and new license-plate holder. Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires were fitted during our test ride and proved to be a good match for this maxi-motard capable of speeds in excess of 120 mph. These tires and the Dunlop Qualifiers will be available as standard equipment.

With lighter wheels, flicking into corners is easier than ever. Tor reports the Dorso is stable mid-turn, as well.

What we have in the 2012 Aprilia Dorsoduro is a fairly heavy maxi-motard tuned for road fun. The 2012 Dorso is no doubt a better motorcycle than last year’s model just after this minor update. The engine is smoother, the bike is lighter, and there’s even more fun to be had.

With this upgrade, one feels like Aprilia may have had half an idea to perhaps label this as the Dorsoduro 1200 Factory, but the upgrades weren’t quite enough to justify the label. It’s a good little upgrade anyway, and who wouldn’t want to shave off nearly six pounds of unsprung weight?

Highs:

Lows:

  • Weight reduction and better handling
  • Decent Sachs suspension
  • Aprilia’s V90 feels better and is a package with great potential
  • Riding modes selection still awkward and, for that reason, useless whilst on the move
  • Keep reducing that weight, Noale, and we’ll have a maxi-motard sprinter eventually

2012 Kawasaki KX450F Review

The Kawasaki KX450F is to become the jack of all trades in the world of dirt bike. KX450F were on the podium in Pro Motocross, Supercross, WORCS, GNCC, enduro cross and track events, flat and homogeneous. The KX450Fs success has always revolved around two main features: an enormous power and capacity to perform well enough about it.

Although he won the races, the KX is a great rider ergonomics, too heavy for a while (some would say rude), low-power delivery and less cornering behavior of a net has traditionally been the KX450F winning popularity contests. When we drove across the frozen lakes of the 2011 version and the motocross track cross-country level, we have more or less understood the wheel. When we learned about the changes to the Kawasaki KX450F 2012, we could not wait to try it by pressing the start of the famous Red Bud Track Buchanan, MI.

Kawasaki is proud of the improvements in the 2012 KX450F. We drive through to summarize quickly, but you can read about these changes in detail here.

Kawasaki complained too great in a variety of ways. First, there is a new frame thinner, but the most important of the handlebars can be adjusted to four different configurations, with new triple clamps, while the footrest can be raised or lowered to accommodate personal preferences. If the KX450F still feels a little big, there is a link suspension option that reduces the seat height of 6 mm. The end result is more ergonomic adjustable motocross bike in recent history.

Kawasaki has also worked to improve the reliability by incorporating a thicker first gear, a crankshaft specially designed to improve the balance and the low gas engine, piston rings and thinner to improve the atmosphere. They cut small pieces of the whole weight of the bike, get to the point of installing a fuel lighter. The new electronic fuel injection EFI makes setup easier than ever. The new exhaust system was designed to reduce weight, improve performance and meets the AMA sound. Something entirely new launch system is a control Kawasaki. It is designed to improve grip and handling out of the starting line before the kick return to normal mode, the pilot selects third gear.

Red Bud is a wonderful creation of motocross, the earth well maintained motocross track and a world-class. Obviously you can not do a bike test "real world" in a perfectly groomed national motocross track with factory technicians on his shoulder. We tried to find a variety of driving conditions, in addition to the motocross track, but not yield a "first impression" as a test of the bike properly. Our first impression after having spent so long in 2011 and KX450F 2010, was how the 2012 model felt much smaller and lighter than their predecessors.

One thing that has helped cornering and overall handling of the 2011 KX450F is milder calibrate the fuel injection mapping the lower end of the power range. Tuning the fuel injection KX450Fs earlier was complex, requiring special software and adapters. It is a model 2012, changing three base maps EFI take up to 10 seconds without special tools. Kawasaki has three connectors EFI colored, soft ground, medium, normal, hard ground, and that fire only in the wiring. Terrain map is designed for hard conditions of low voltage, so its really the power of "soft" of the three. Initially embarrassed to admit we were, we wanted a softer, hit the "hard pack / map without Traction , but said later that most of the other editors of the magazine she felt better, even waking up in the map.

Even brand new, with zero time on the clock, changed in 2012 KX450F gently under the power and the clutch worked well. We noticed a considerable difference between the second and the third was a bit too big. Adding a tooth or two rear sprocket would be an improvement. The clutch is light and progressive feel really helps the customs of the KX450F, but how long the last vestiges clear link. Kawasaki has improved in 2012 to change the clutch springs a little stiffer to cure the most talked about problem of wear they had with older models. In two days we drove in 2012, the clutch has never wavered or the need for excessive regulation. The first gear is quite low, even for off-road use, especially considering there is so much torque on tap.

It was a hot 97F on the second day. As we walked slowly and pretend to be Endurocrossers, we cooled the KX450F the splashes through the water, but we do not need. Radiators gurgled a bit slow moving, but never boiled their cooling. There is another improvement over 2010 and 2011 models. Sometimes when the engine was really hot, it would flame out at low revs and take several shots to restart. Its something weve never had a problem with last year and could probably be cured with careful tuning EFI. Besides the three main "plug and play" tables of the new injection system Kawasaki is adjustable via a PC running Windows.

Despite some major changes in the chassis remains vague as momentum KX450F in a row. Its a big heavy bike that likes to be controlled with the accelerator. When mounted aggressive it revolves around the power faster, but it does not eliminate the line inside. In 2012 KX450F Sharp, but you have to work on it and the bike does not wander more than we want.

We tried to improve cornering by adjusting the height of the pallet fork extension and compression settings, SAG, the rear suspension and high-speed compression and support for the positioning of the hand to find the ideal balance of traction, stability and ability to change. In turn, improved, but never good. Despite this, a Kawasaki is a great speed exceptionally stable. KX450F rear brake is excellent, but the front is still on average. We Bled the front brake lever and tried different settings, but never had to get rid of pain "on or off" feeling. Cushions or different than a rotor might help. We would like to try a different front tire as well, which could potentially improve both the performance cornering and braking.

2012 suspension KX450Fs not beat a small effect on the track lumber. It was difficult to get an electric shock preload back off enough to get the 95-100mm compressed with 160 pound rider. The heavier riders do not complain much, but it would be nice if equipped with a Kawasaki 450 forks with adjustable preload a SFF to use, it is 250F. Kawasaki modified the link shaken this year to improve the traction of the rear wheel. Please note the beginning of the establishment was essential, and when we retreated to soak up the pressure to split wheel jumping harder. Without touching the bottom of the resistance has always been excellent, and although the bottom of the suspension the effect is never too difficult.

Keep in mind that we are probably lighter than the average 450 rider, there was our favorite chassis settings in Red Bud:

Kawasaki technicians told us that they forget to worry about using the perfect starting techniques, adding that the system rewards Launch Control novice drivers are not professionals. Thats how it works. Mounted on the door and press the launch control button until it flashes. Select second gear, the pin and release the clutch when the gate drops. The ignition timing is delayed a bit by the launch control system until the rider approaches the third speed, improving traction.

Kawasaki Launch Control system does not work begins in third gear, which is a shame, because testers found it easier and easier to leave port for the third. Kawasaki has a lot of torque and power to a strong third gear starts, as you can see here.

The KX-F is really a fun bike. Please do not find mountains and turn every piece of land from a jump. With a low speed first, the clutch smooth and long wheelbase of the KX450F feel stands up to the top of the hills with knots, but the suspension is too sharp face deviates success and makes it difficult to maintain the line. Moto last year took over roads garbage acceptable pace, but 2012 is more severe. This could be due to the foam of the new headquarters for the 2012 or the suspension of new joints or the new image. In any case, we are not sure why yet. The fuel capacity will be lower in 2012 than in 2011, the narrowest and flat sitting position reduces the gas tank capacity 1.9 to 1.6 liters. The new exhaust system was very quiet at first, but becomes too strong by a score of six hours.

So what do you think? We need more time to lead and learn to live KX450F before you can give a complete answer. 2012 Kawasaki KX450F is a bike that can win races. We consider 2012 better than the 2011 model, because it feels more compact and aggressive. Classic KX450F features are pretty much the same, but the overall level of performance and reliability is increased. We hope to have the opportunity to lead and evaluate the 2012 KX450F in the real world.

Thank you to USA Kawasaki KX450F 2012 to invite the press release, Red Bud to deliver the test facility and amazing Jim Carver to help provide input test.

ENGINE

779cc, DOHC, sixteen valve (4-valves/cyl), liquid-cooled, forty degree inclined, in-line four-cylinder engine. The engine has been tuned to supply many low to mid vary torque with sturdy nevertheless linear throttle response. Redline is about at eleven,500 rpm and options a "soft" rev limiter to safeguard the engine.

Pistons, cylinder, cylinder head, cams, valves and crankshaft are distinctive to the Fazer eight. Most alternative engine parts are shared with the FZ1.

Compact "Pent roof" combustion chamber style options 4-valves per cylinder and a 12:1 compression ratio for wonderful torque feeling. Four valves per cylinder enhances the low to midrange torque.

Intake valves are 26mm in diameter whereas the exhaust valves are 22mm. The valve angle is about at twenty six degrees to stay the combustion chamber compact

Crankshaft inertial mass has been optimized to attain sturdy torque over a broad rpm vary further as quick throttle response.

"Fracture split" connecting rods are carburized for additional strength and use a nut less style. The lower finish "cap" of the rod is created from identical piece of fabric because the higher portion; this style is thought as "fracture splitting". This style aids establishing true huge finish roundness and bigger precision in con rod dimensions for wonderful sturdiness despite the high horsepower masses.

Ceramic composite cylinder "bores" are a "liner less" style with the ceramic coating sprayed directly on the aluminum block. This coating enhances the skinny film of oil between the cylinder and piston that reduces friction and will increase power. alternative necessary advantages include; wonderful heat dissipation for consistent power delivery and reduced weight since there are not any serious liners.

Short skirt, light-weight cast pistons. light-weight style aids in quick engine response and reduced engine weight. throughout the forging method, the aluminum is heated to the purpose where it will be formed harassed in a very die however to not the purpose that it melts. By not melting the aluminum, the fabric stays stronger and hence will be lighter with wonderful sturdiness.
Lightweight, hollow intake and exhaust camshafts offer unimaginable horsepower and quick engine response. Cam profiles and also the cam timing are designed to reinforce low to midrange power and torque.

Inline four cylinder crankshaft relies on the FZ1 style.

Automatic hydraulic cam chain tensioner reduces each maintenance and mechanical engine noise.

Mikuni "sub throttle valve" fuel injection system relies on the FZ1 style, that includes 35mm throttle bodies fitted with T.P.S. (Throttle Position Sensor). This kind of fuel injection uses sub throttle valves additionally to the most valves to more management the intake airflow. The sub valves optimize the intake volumetric potency the least bit rpms and are powered by a stepping motor thats controlled by the european. The key profit is superb "ride ability" and throttle response.

The injectors are sequential high dynamic vary kind that includes four holes and a twin directional spray pattern for wonderful power and a linear throttle response across the complete rev vary.

The fuel injections light-weight Electronic management Unit (ECU) utilizes a strong 32-bit methodor for quick management of the injection process. The compact style conjointly reduces weight.

Specially designed seven.8 litre airbox options completely different intake funnel lengths for the inner (150mm) and outer (125mm) cylinders. The profit may be a wide torque curve. A high flow paper kind air filter is employed.

R1 impressed "stacked" 3-axis gearbox / clutch style stacks input/output shafts to centralize mass and keeps overall engine size shorter front to back. As a result, the stacked style offers the engineers the liberty to put the engine within the frame for optimum front to rear weight balance and thereby maximizing handling performance.

Smooth shifting wide ratio 6-speed transmission options optimized gear ratios for max performance within the "real world". fifth and sixth ratios are "tall" for reduced engine rpms at highway speeds for wonderful rider comfort.

Compact, heavy duty, multi-plate clutch ensures consistent, positive engagement. The clutch has been designed to supply a light-weight lever pull for wonderful rider comfort … particularly throughout stop and go town use.

4 into a pair of into one exhaust system options 35mm diameter, chrome steel header pipes and a brief style silencer / muffler. The header pipe length has been optimized for max power and torque. this method is fitted with a 3-way honeycomb catalyzer with an oxygen sensor to cut back harmful CO and HC exhaust emissions. The oxygen sensor monitors the number of oxygen within the spent gases and adjusts the fuel -air mixture via the european and FI system for max performance with minimum emissions.

High-efficiency "curved" style radiator options compact twin ring-type fans for max cooling potency. This rad and fan style permits additional airflow than standard flat style rads to take care of optimum engine temperatures for consistent power output.

Large liquid-cooled oil cooler maintains stable lubricant temperatures for extended engine life.

Convenient cartridge vogue spin-on oil filter.

Convenient oil level sight glass suggests that straightforward oil level inspection.

Maintenance-free transistor-controlled digital ignition ensures nice performance the least bit rpms.

Air Induction System (AIS … not ram air) reduces harmful HC and CO emissions for a cleaner surroundings.

CHASSIS / SUSPENSION

Gravity forged, light-weight aluminum twin spar frame provides an optimized rigidity balance for unimaginable sports performance combined with nice stability. The engine may be a stressed member of the chassis, permitting a lighter main frame style while not sacrificing stability and light-weight, agile handling qualities. The frame is that the same spec and form because the FZ1.

The riding position is one in all the foremost vital options of the Fazer eight. primarily based on the FZ1 layout, it offers a balance between a sporty riding position and wonderful rider comfort because of its upright style.

Key chassis geometry figures include: 1460mm (57.5") wheelbase, fifty one front and forty nine behind weight balance, twenty five degrees of rake and 109 mm of path. The forty seven degree lean angle highlights the Fazer 8s sporty aspect.

Detachable steel rear sub frame permits quick access to rear suspension parts and reduces prices within the event of a "loop-out".

C.F. (Controlled Filling) die forged aluminum truss-type rear swingarm offers nice rear wheel management and traction for razor-sharp cornering and very good stability at speed. The 3-axis stacked engine style permits enough area for the engineers to use this long style (690mm) swingarm, that minimizes the result of the chain tension on the bikes handling.

43mm Kayaba inverted fork offers 130mm (5.1") of wheel travel. Fork offset is twenty five degrees. the advantages of the inverted style embody, reduced "unsprung" weight and reduced fork flex since the larger diameter tubes are gripped within the triple clamps. Unsprung weight is weight or mass of the suspension and also the parts like the wheels and alternative parts that move with the suspension. a discount in unsprung weight permits improved management of the suspension perform.

Lightweight aluminum higher and lower triple clamps.

Link-type Monocross rear suspension options a preload adjustable shock that enables the rider to tailor spring preload to match load and/or road conditions. changes embody nine - manner spring preload. Rear wheel travel is 130mm or five.1"

Dual 310mm floating front discs are squeezed by ultra rigid 4-piston, monoblock calipers which give outstanding stopping power and feel. The master cylinder utilizes a 16mm piston for outstanding stopping power with less lever effort.

267mm rear disc is squeezed by a light-weight single piston slide-type Nissin caliper with sintered metal brake pads.

Lightweight cast-aluminum 5-spoke wheels scale back unsprung weight for excellent handling characteristics. The front wheel is an MT3.50-17 and is fitted with a 120/70-ZR17 radial tire. The rear wheel may be a MT5.50-17 fitted with a 180/55-ZR17 radial tire.

Eye catching, 0.5 fairing offers surprisingly smart wind and weather protection. The windshield options a special vent that enables some airflow behind the screen to assist forestall the "vacuum effect" and to assist scale back buffeting.

Dual "cat eye" halogen 60/55 watt headlights.

Conventional handlebar style options an upright positioning for max everyday riding comfort.

Not many companies are offering 2-stroke engine bikes these days and Suzuki is one of those brands who still have this engine type in its product offering.
Designed for rough roads

People expect from companies to drop their prices like china bikes and in this scenario Suzuki shogun 100cc is priced as high as 83000 rupees. Surprised! Price of this powerful ride is no doubt a bit high.
Drive long routes with shogun
Shogun has a wide seat which makes your long routes comfortable. Besides it has a big fuel tank allowing space for almost 11.5 liters which can take you further and further.
Low resale value
Resale value of this bike is not as good as you may find of Honda motorcycles. This is one of the drawbacks which may prevent you from buying this bike. Suzuki motorbikes are good in looks, performance and fuel efficiency but don’t know why what makes its resale value low.
